Final Revision Assignment

Before I even begin to explain this assignment, please first remember that this final revision, simple as it may seem, is worth a whopping 200 points of your final grade, and should therefore NOT be underestimated. It’s a rather simple assignment. Pick your single favorite paragraph from your entire blog site (posts AND papers), copy it into a new post, skip a space, and then completely 100% rewrite that paragraph, from scratch. Skip another space, and, yes, rewrite it again, from scratch. Skip another space, and now TRANSITION into a second paragraph of original composition, continuing on a theme from the first, or embarking on a new, related one. Finally, skip one last space, and then completely 100% rewrite that paragraph, from scratch. So that’s 1 old, copied paragraph plus 4 new paragraphs. The only requirement is that all 5 paragraphs must be at least 150 words, so watch your word counts!!! Your grade on this assignment will depend almost entirely on how well you follow these instructions and, most importantly, how well you show a functional competence of the core instruction of this course: that writing is re-writing, that the best writing comes from a rigorously disciplined process, and that they can always be better (both the writing and the process). For those of you concerned about length, note, for reference, that this paragraph is precisely 245 words. Welcome to Comp Prose at wordpress.com, a class blog for English 121-017 at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado. This blog will be the strategic and organizational focal point for all writing assignments, discussions, and announcements. You’ll also find a number of links to a variety of the fascinating material over which we’ll be musing this spring 2009 semester. These links appear in tabs across the top of this page, where you can also find our class syllabus (that’s Greek for course outline), as well as some other material. Posts will be sorted into a number of categories down the bottom right side of this page as I publish them, providing easy navigation to anyone following along. Categories include: Announcements & Updates, Weekly Class Plans, Blog Assignments, Essay Assignments, Discussions, Easy Writing Rules, Student Posts of the Week, and Reality Checks (my own musings). Links to student pages, finally, can be found in the “Blogroll” below the “Recent Comments” section, which shows the 10 latest comments to this page, bottom right.

Students will need to start their own wordpress.com accounts to participate, but they do not require their own computers at home. They’ll have plenty of access to public machines around campus, and we’ll also devote a good chunk of each of our exciting 15 Thursday evenings comprising our semester together to the actual process of, as I like to say, pounding plastic, i.e. (that is), producing words and ideas as fast as we possibly can. I’m a smidgen reluctant to rely so heavily on this page, and I fear losing some students because of it, so let me finish this welcome letter with a list of my top five reasons for doing it:

4. It’s easy (and you can find some simple step-by-step instructions, in addition to a slew of other helpful information for those unfamiliar with or perhaps even terrified by the concept of blogging, here).

2. It’s extremely efficient, saving students precious time while simultaneously allowing them to experience so much more than previously dreamed possible.

1. And the #1 reason I started this blog is because it saves time (hopefully, we’ll see) for yours truly. Since the powers that be pay adjuncts less than teenaged baby sitters, most of us have other jobs, or ‘gigs,’ as I like to say. I have several gigs, all of which are very important to me, and so my time is truly my most valuable asset. This doesn’t mean I’ll skimp students on the job, though. In fact, I’ve instructed 100′s of credit hours of composition courses at a number of schools, and my track record is pretty good. You can see some former students’ comments here, here, here (I couldn’t make those ones up if I tried), and here (might need a log in for that one).

I am a contract grader! This means that all students who participate and complete their assignments will at least pass this course. If you’re looking to coast through Comp I, sorry, but you won’t find that opporunity here. This class meets just 15 times, so missing a single class is like missing a full week’s worth of work, despite this nifty blog. Miss two weeks, and you’ll likely never catch up. Learning to write, and to write well, may be the single most important thing you do in your education, and I solemnly promise I can help you on that path. But only if you’re ready. Who knows what else we’ll learn together!
